The Beautiful Nisyros Island is Volcanic, Green and Quiet!

The beautiful Nisyros Island or Nissyros Island is small volcanic and lunar shaped island in the Dodecanese group of islands on the Aegean Sea. The round and lunar shape of the island reflect the feeling of the moon.

There are some peaks inside this circle including Mount Boriatiko at the north above the volcano area, Mount Profitis Ilias, Mount Trapezina and Mount Karariatis at the west of the volcano.

In the Greek mythology, the island was shaped when Poseidon cut part of Kos and threw it onto the giant Polyvotis to stop him from escaping.

Polyvotis is now a name given to the newest crater of the volcano at the northwest of the Stefanos caldera wall.

The ancient name of the beautiful Nisyros Island or Nissiros Island was Porphyris with ancient walls from the 5th century BC stood as part of the acropolis of the island found near Mandraki.

The Italians call it Nisiros or Nissiros and the Turks Incirli. It lies with other islets on the area of the Karpathio Pelagos, all of which are part of the Municipality of Nisyros.

The other islets are Gyali, Stroggyli, Pachia or Pacheia, Pergoussa, Agios Antonios and Kandelioussa. Those islets are uninhabited islets except Gyali, the largest islet, as there are more than 10 inhabitants.

The Islet of Gyali is important source of wealth to the beautiful Nisyros Island or Nissyros Island. It is rich of deposits of perlite and pumice stone, which is volcanic light glass used for refinement. However, there are some crops grown on the terraced slopes of the island.

In the past, the island was a source of millstones used in some of the earliest watermills, according to epigrammatist Antipater of Thessalonica in the 1st century BC, the author of some hundred epigrams in the Greek Anthology and the first person who made the first reference of watermills in history.

The beautiful Nisyros Island or Nissyros Island stretches 41.6 square kilometres in the area it occupies on the pelagos, between the beautiful Kos Island at the north and the beautiful Tilos Island at the south.

It is about few kilometres south of Kos Island, east of Marmaris, north of the beautiful Karpathos Island and northwest of both, the Greek Rhodes Island and Tilos Island. However, with the other islets it includes, it reaches 50 square kilometres with more than 948 inhabitants.

There are few villages in the beautiful Nisyros Island or Nisiros Island. Those settlements are Mandraki, Pali or Paloi, Nikia or Nikeia and Emporios.

Most of the populations live in the capital town of Mandraki, as there are more than 682 inhabitants in the capital, more than 167 inhabitants in Pali, more than 48 inhabitants in Nikeia and more than 25 inhabitants in Emporios.

The beautiful Nisyros Island or Nissiros Island has regular ferries that link it to other Greek Aegean Islands and to Piraeus Port in Greece

Local ferries such as Nisyros and Konstantinos run between Mandraki and Kardamena in Kos daily. The Sea Star provides catamarans that run weekly between the beautiful Nisyros Island, Tilos and Rhodes plus hydrofoils to Kos and Rhodes.

The company offers daily excursions to Kefalos and Kos. The interior transportation by buses link the main villages in the beautiful Nisyros Island or Nisiros Island and get to the volcano at the centre of the island.

More than three buses run from the bus station near the quay in Mandraki to Nikia or Nikea through Pali or Paloi. There are also few taxis in the island.

In addition, excursion boats run to Giali Islet in July and August taking travellers to the beautiful Giali Beach. Motorcycle rental outlets are on the main street and the right side of the quay in Mandraki.

There are more than five beautiful beaches in the beautiful Nisyros Island. From the northwest around the coast to the east and down to the south, there is the beautiful Hohlaki Beach, the beautiful White Beach, and the beautiful Pali Beach, both at the northeast and then the beautiful Lies Beach and the beautiful Pahia Ammos Beach at the central eastern coast.

Dream Seeking: On Nisyros a Small Greek Island

Sue and her friend Amy stayed for a part of the summer, their presence causing a significant stir amongst the people of the small mountain village of Nikia where Lin, Richard and Garry had made their home.

From killing the pig to burying the donkey; from cleaning rooms to repairing doors; from washing in well-water inhabited by several species of aquatic life, to dancing at the festivals, their life was filled with a variety and richness of experiences which have to be read to be believed.

This year was the beginning of the realisation of their dream.

The Dance of the Islands: Insularity, Networks, the Athenian Empire, and the Aegean World (Oxford Classical Monographs)

Christy Constantakopoulou examines the history of the Aegean islands and changing concepts of insularity, with particular emphasis on the fifth century BC. Islands are a prominent feature of the Aegean landscape, and this inevitably created a variety of different (and sometimes contradictory) perceptions of insularity in classical Greek thought.

The South Aegean Active Volcanic Arc, Volume 7: Present Knowledge and Future Perspectives (Developments in Volcanology)
