The beautiful Milos Island or Melos Island is a volcanic island in the most western side of the Cyclades group of islands on the Aegean Sea.

It lies at the north of the Sea of Crete and down about 205 kilometres at the south of Athens and it takes about 4 hours and 12 minutes by ferries.

It occupies the area between the Kritiko Pelagos and the Mirtoo Pelagos at the southwest of the beautiful Sifnos Island, the beautiful Paros Island and the beautiful Naxos Island.

The island is west of the beautiful Folegandros Island, the beautiful Sikinos Island and the beautiful Ios Island.

The Municipality of Milos stretches 160 square kilometres including the uninhabited islands of Antimilos and Akradies.

Milos is the 5th largest island in the Cyclades group of islands after Naxos, the beautiful Andros Island, Paros and the beautiful Tinos Island. There are more than 4,771 inhabitants in the beautiful Milos Island or Melos Island.

Among the findings is the fresco of the flying fish found in the ruins of the principal palace at Phylakopi or Filakopi and pottery from the Mycenaean age with decorative designs and deposits of obsidian, a volcanic glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock.

This volcanic glass is source of treasure in the island the volcanic nature of the island has produced. The Mionan was one of the earliest settlements in the Cyclades.

The inhabitants of the island at that time did not participate with Athenians in the Peloponnesian wars. Therefore, they suffered much in 416 BC when the Athenians massacred the males and enslaved the women and children.

The volcano might have shaped it as oyster with its mouth on the huge Milos Bay opening onto the Mirtoo Pelagos, seeming as if it is ready to swallow it.

At the upper northeastern part is Kimolos Island separated from it by Polonia Strait. From this part, beautiful capes, bays and beaches start by Cape Pelekouda at the northeastern edge.

Following the coastline to the east and then down, there are Polonia Beach, just under the cape, Voudia Beach on Voudia Bay, Paleohori Beach at the southeast, Cape Firiplaka, Provatas Beach and Yarakas Beach at the south.

Cape Psalida is on the southwestern corner, followed up by Agiou Ioannou Beach and Ammoudaraki Beach at the western coast.

Cape Vani is down at the opening edge of Milos Gulf, the hot springs, Papikinou Beach and Langada Beach deep on the bay, Plathiena Beach at the upper edge of the gulf, followed by Cape Kambanes at the northwest, Firopotamos Beach down after the cape and Sarakiniko Beach.

The beautiful Milos Island or Melos Island is linked to Greece and other islands in the area by air and sea. Daily flights run between Adamas and Athens.

Daily catamarans run to Piraeus in Greece and to Serifos and Sifnos Island. Three or four catamarans go weekly to Kythnos Island.

Nisos Kimolos ferry runs five or six times daily from Pollonia to Kimolos. Two ferries run daily between the main port of Adamas and Piraeus.

One ferry goes daily to Sifnos, Serifos and Kythnos. Six or seven ferries sail weekly to Kimolos and one ferry goes three times weekly to Sitia port in Crete and connects with the beautiful Karpathos Island and Rhodes.

Three or four ferries sail weekly to Sikinos and Folegandros. Tow ferries run weekly to Paros and one ferry goes weekly to the beautiful Santorini Island and the beautiful Ios Island.

The interior transportation in the beautiful Milos Island or Melos Island includes daily buses, taxis, excursion boats, rental cars and rental motorcycles.

Buses run every hour between Adamas, Plaka and Trypiti and there are four buses daily to Paleohori, Pollonia and Provatas.

However, most of the beautiful beaches are inaccessible by land transport. They only have maritime transport.
