The Beautiful Leros Island is Inspiring!

The beautiful Leros Island is in the Dodecanese group of islands on the Aegean Sea, at the south of the beautiful Patmos Island, very close at the north of the beautiful Kalymnos Island and links to it through some uninhabited islets.

This medium size island reaches 74 square kilometres and it attract tourists from heavy tourism traffic destinations to its quiet beautiful sites, hilly green landscape, landlocked bays and the architectural museum of the Italian fascist period.

The beautiful Leros Island seems corset at the centre and formed of two parts, almost equal in size, except that the half southern part receded at the western central coast to give way to the bay where Lakki lies in the interior of the semi landlocked and long bay.

The airport is at the top north of the island about 7.2 kilometres from Agia Marina, 9.6 kilometres from Lakkio, 4.4 kilometres from Alinda, 12.3 kilometres from Xirokampos, 9.9 kilometres from Temenia and 7.6 kilometres from Drymonas.

A daily flight connects the beautiful Leros Island to the mainland taking off from the airport near Partheni to Athens. Many flights take off weekly to the beautiful Rhodes Island connecting to the beautiful Kos Island and to the beautiful Astypalea Island as well.

Like the beautiful Kalymnos Island, Leros is on the north-south ferry routes. From Agia Marina, the ferries run to Nea Styra, Rodos, Pythagorio, Symi, Kalymnos, Agathonissi, Patmos, Lipsi and Kos.

From Lakkio or Lakki, the ferries go to Pythagorio, the Greek Mykonos Island, Lipsi, Piraeus, Patmos, Katapola, Kalymnos, Rodos, Symi, Kos, Agathonissi, and Arki.

The caique of the beautiful Patmos Island connects it daily in summer with Patmos and the beautiful Lipsi Island and Lipsi caique connects it from Agia Marina with Lipsi. Another caique links it from Xirokambos with Myrties in Kalymnos.

There are daily ferries between Leros and the mainland connecting Lakki port in Leros to the port of Piraeus in the mainland. The ferries take about 11 hours from Piraeus to the beautiful Leros Island.

Ferries also run daily between Leros, Rhodes and Kos. In addition, there are weekly ferries running between Leros and the beautiful Samos Island.

The hydrofoils and catamarans operate daily in summer between the beautiful Leros Island, Patmos, Kos, Rhodes and the beautiful Samos Island. Many of them run from Agia Marina at the central eastern coast in the mentioned waistline of Leros.

The island has interior bus transportation from the bus station at Platanos. About four, five buses run daily connecting the capital with Partheni through Alinda and six, seven buses go daily to Xirokambos via Lakki. There are many taxis in the beautiful Leros Island, as well as car rental, bicycle rental and motorcycle rental outlets.

Agia Marina at the east central coast is 3.4 kilometres northeast of Lakki or Lakkio, about 5.9 kilometres from Xirokampos and 2.9 kilometres from Alinda at the northwest of it. Lakki or Lakkio is about 3.4 kilometres away from Xirokampos, which lies at the south of it and about 5.8 kilometres from Alinda, which is at the northeast of it.

Xirokampos is about 8.5 kilometres from Alinda and 2.4 kilometres from Temenai at the north of it, Alinda is about 4.4 from Leros airport and about 8.5 kilometres from Xirokampos at the southwest of it.

Partheni is about 7.9 kilometres from Agia Marina at the southeast of it and 10.4 kilometres from Lakkio at the south of it. Temenia is about 10 from Partheni at the top north of the island and 3.5 kilometres from Agia Marina at the northeast of it.

The beautiful Leros Island has more than ten beautiful protected beaches where people enjoy swimming, diving, water sports and stunning views of the beautiful the sea and the area around.

The beautiful Agia Kioura Beach is at the north, followed down by the beautiful Blefoutis Beach on Blefoutis Bay, a well semi locked bay down Cape Asfoungaros, facing the islet of Strongli at the entrance of the bay.

The beautiful Beach of Alinda is on Alinda Bay at the eastern coast. There is another beautiful beach on this bay at the north of it. At the south corner of this bay is Agia Marina, the second important port in the beautiful Leros Island.

The beautiful Pandeli Beach is on the north corner of Paneli Bay, under Cape Aspro followed by the beautiful Vromolithos Beach, which is very near at the south of it. Both of those beautiful beaches face the islet of Agia Kyriaki.

The beautiful Xirokampos Beach is deep inside the long Kirokambos Bay, near the Town of Xirokampos. Kirokambos Bay lies between Cape Diapori at the southern edge of the beautiful Leros Island and Cape Kirokambos at the west of it.

The islets of Gabiani, Velona and Kalpi are near the entrance of this bay.

The beautiful Lakki Beach is on Lakki Bay at the western coast. It is at a distance from the main port of the beautiful Leros Island. The landlocked Bay of Lakki starts from Cape Angistro, goes deep inside and ends at Cape Katsouni.

At the central western coast is the beautiful Beach of Gourna on Gourna Bay. The bay lies between Cape Ikonisma and Cape Katakrotiri. It is possible that in addition to those beautiful beaches that some other beaches are on many unmentioned bay on the beautiful Leros Island.

Leros Brief History

Part of the history of the beautiful Leros Island was brutal, as the populations faced hard times during the Fascist period in Italy, when Mussolini occupied the island.

Once again, Greek political dissidents exiled from Greece to the island and the people with mental situations faced harassment and exploitation during the dictatorship of the military juntas in Greece.

In the earliest history, the people in the beautiful Island of Leros stood with the democratic Athenians in the Peloponnesian wars between 431 BC - 404 BC. The Spartans took over the island. There are ruins of the sanctuary of the goddess Artemis from that time.

During the Roman era, Alexander the Great took the beautiful Leros Island and when the Roma Empire divided, Leros became subject to Constantinople the capital of the eastern Roman Empire.

Leros was one of the most fortified islands at that time. The Genoese Venetians occupied it in the 13th century, but the Ottomans failed two times to occupy it, starting from 1505. They succeeded during the siege of Rhodes in 1522 and signed a treaty with the Knights of St John. They ruled Leros for 400 years.
