When Living is Pleasure in Beautiful Naxos Villages, --

Beautiful towns, villages, hamlets and beaches in the Beautiful Greek Islands attracted me recently to search and read about them.

Beautiful Greek Memorials from my childhood enticed me to read more about Greece. So, the result was this page and many other pages about the Aegean Greek Islands.

In addition to Drymalia town, villages scatter from the north to the south at the east of Naxos, inland or on the coast.

Those villages and the hamlets are Apollonas, Mesi, Lionas, Atsipapi, Azalas, Moutsouna, Lygaridia at the coast, and Kanaki at the coast, Kleido at the coast and Panermos. All of them are in Drymalia Municipality.

The Beautiful Naxos Villages and the hamlets at the west from the north to the south (including beaches - see down three paragraphs) are Aghia, Kampos, Chilia Vrysi, and they are all in Drymalia Municipality.

Galini, Egares, Moni Chrysostomou, Naxos (town), Agkidia, Glinado, Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, Maragkas, Plaka, Mikri Vivla, Aghios Arsenios, Aghios Thalelaios and Kastraki are all in Naxos Municipality.

Pyrgaki and Agiassos in this area are in Drymalia Municipality.

Beautiful Naxos Villages at the north and in the interior part of Drymalia Municipality are Koronida or Koronis, Skado and Koronos (town).

Descending from the north to the south there are Sifones, Aperathos or Apiranthos and Damarionas (hamlet) in Drymalia Municipality and Kinidaros, Kourounochori and Potamia in Naxos Municipality.

Tsikkalareio, Chalkion, Damalas (hamlet) and Danakos are in Drymalia Municipality. Kato Sagkri above the hill and Ano Sagrio are in Naxos Municipality.

The beaches in Drymalia Municipality and the beaches in Naxos Municipality are here at Beautiful Naxos Beaches. Some of those Beautiful Naxos Villages lie on those beautiful beaches.

There are some tourists' attractions in some villages in Tragaea region, a fertile plain in the centre of the island, where the olive groves in the plain make it beautiful and some Byzantine churches scatter. The churches are at the top of the rocky areas.

Naxos Town lies at the west of the plain, where the inhabitants enjoy living in Beautiful Naxos Island. More information about it is at this link.

Halki, Chalki, or Chalkio as the local people in Naxos know it, was once the centre of commerce in Naxos. It lies in the region at the western coast and it is within Drymalia Municipality.

Described as one of the most beautiful villages that attract tourists, Halki in the Tragea valley is covered by fruits and olive groves.

The Gratsias or Gratsia Tower of Barotsi or Barozzi, with its three floors and chimney, from the 17th century is at the top in Halki.

In addition, the village is known for its citrus liqueurs since 19th century, although the citron was first known in 300 BC. The locals make desert from it.

There is also a gallery and a workshop for handcrafts like pottery, gift shop for ceramics made out of fish and olive decorations and taverns.

The way down from Apiranthos to Halki is like the road from Asmara to Massawa through the mountains.

Filoti or Filotio, the biggest village in the region is down the Mountain of Zeus occupying the rich area of the plain. Here at the south of Filotio, you will find Zas Cave, a fountain, Aria Spring and an area for picnics.

In Sangri, the semi-tower of Bazeos Castle is at the east near Sangri village. It was the Monastery of Timios Stavros (True Cross) in the 17th century.

It is renewed and it works now as cultural centre that organizes art exhibitions and annual festival in Naxos from July to August. The ruins of the Temple of Demeter lie near Sangri where there's a museum.

Apiranthos has museums, marble streets, alleyways and stone houses up to the Fanari Mountain. It was an emery-mining centre. Its inhabitants came first escaping from Crete during the Turkish rule.

It is home of Manolis Glezos, a resistance fighter who replaced the Nazi flag by the Greek flag at the top of the Acropolis during the Second World War and became the a parliament member representing the Cyclades.

The museums in thsi village are the Museum of Natural History, The Geology Museum and the Archaeology Museum.

Moutsouna is at the eastern coast in Drymalia Municipality. The road that leads from Apiranthos to it descends through the mountain just like the road between Massawa and Asmara. It was the port through which the emery mined shipped. The beach near it is Psili Amas.

Apollonas at the northern coast is a popular resort with its beach. There is a cracked statue of a gargantuan from the 7th century BC.
