Zante covers 410 square kilometres of land area. It lies on the Ionian Sea, west of Greece and south of Kefallonia Island. There are more than 41,472 inhabitants in the entire island. The capital of the island and the main port is Zakynthos, Zakinthos Town or Zante Town and it is on the southeastern part of the island. The first tenth largest Greek islands in all groups of islands respectively are Crete, Evia, the beautiful Lesvos Island, the beautiful Rhodes Island, the beautiful Chios Island, the beautiful Kefallonia Island, the beautiful Corfu Island, the beautiful Limnos Island, the beautiful Samos Island and the beautiful Naxos Island. Flights between the capital city of the beautiful Zakynthos Island and Athens, the capital city of Greece are daily. The International airport of Zakynthos referred to it as Dionysios Solomos' airport is about 4.3 kilometres at the southwest of the capital city and it takes about 7 minutes drive by a taxi and about 50 minutes by foot. Frequent buses shuttle between Zakynthos and the main towns starting from the local bus station one block behind the waterfront on Filita 42. They run to Alikes, Argasi, Kalamaki, Laganas and Tsilivi. Other villages in the beautiful Zakynthos Island, however, have rare connection. Some car rentals and motorcycle rentals are on the main squares such as Plateia Agiou Markou and the main streets such as Makri and Dimokratias in the capital city. Ferries and buses link the island of Zakynthos to Greece and ferries link it with Brindisi in the southeast of Italy and other islands in the area through Kefallonia. About seven daily ferries run between Zakynthos, the main port of the island and Kyllini in the Peloponnes in the high summer season. Ferries run also in this season between the port of Agios Nikolaos at the north of the beautiful Zakynthos Island and Pesada in the Municipality of Livathou at the south-western coast of Cephalonia Island. However, this is not a destination to take until something has developed in regards to public transportation. Boats also run on trips around the beautiful Zakynthos Island and they run by local small trades. There are six municipalities in the beautiful Zakynthos Island. Those municipalities in an alphabetical order are Alykon Municipality or Alikon Municipality, Arkadyon Municipality or Arkadion Municipality, Artemision Municipality, Elation Municipality or Elatia Municipality, Laganas Municipality and Zakynthos Municipality or Zakinthos Municipality. The beautiful Zakynthos Island is one of two nesting grounds of the loggerhead turtles in the Ionian Sea region. The other nesting ground of the endangered loggerhead turtle is in Kefallonia. In Zante, they nest on the shores of Laganas Bay at the southern coast of Zante Island. This area has annual average of 1,300 nests on the beaches of Daphni, Gerakas, Kalamaki, Laganas, Marathonisi and Sekania; almost half the nests in Greece, so it is the most important nesting ground in the country. However, the development of tourism is a second factor that affects the livelihood and endangers the loggerhead turtles, forcing more than 3,000 of immigrating loggerhead turtles to abandon their nesting grounds on the shores of the beautiful Zakynthos Island, Kefalonia and other Greek nesting grounds as well.
