Remember the Greeks of Sudan!

by Admin

Moawia Ahmed, one of my friends in Greece sent me the following lines in a personal message, so I translated it and edited it for this comment, calling to remember the Greeks of Sudan.

If you were one of them, please contact me as soon as possible. If you knew anything about the topic of this page, please use the form at Ancient Greek Culture to write it. Thanks.

In the past, there were more than twelve thousands of Greeks living in peace in Sudan and they became good Sudanese citizens. That was before the Military Religious Regime in Sudan forced them to leave. There are now less than 200 Greeks living in Sudan.

The Greeks who had been living in Sudan for long time will not go back to Sudan now, as the Sudanese Dictatorial Regimes continue to rule since 1958. It is difficult even for the sons of mixed marriages to stay, so they turned out to Greece, Britain and Cyprus.

However, bad political winds have never changed the way they feel as Sudanese too. They consider Sudan their second home as they feel it and wish it to be. They still consider it to be of important value to them that composes the core of their memorials.

The Greek pioneers formed the Association of the Greeks of Sudan for this reason and they meet in their assembly to chat about their memories and prepare the famous Sudanese dishes of Sudanese beans and falafel (ta'mia) for dinner.

The late Professor Costas Evangelides was President of the association. Professor Costas Evangelides was one of the graduates of the University of Khartoum. He loved Sudan more than any other country. He was very generous and he did not accept Sudanese in Greece to talk with him in Greek. He would simply reply to them in Sudanese.

Unfortunately, most of those good Greeks have become old people and part of the Sudanese history will be gone with them without being registered when they leave this world.

Your commitment is very important if you were one of those nice Greeks or if you love Sudan. Write about your experiences or about them and upload pictures. Many thanks.
