The beautiful Lefkada Town is at the northeastern tip of the beautiful Lefkada Island. A 50 metres floating bridge links it to the mainland of Greece. The capital town of the Island of Lefkada is the administrational, cultural, and commercial hub of the island.

It lies behind a promontory on a lagoon. Earthquakes hit the town in 1948 and 1971 and they rebuilt the town in a way to survive the constant earthquakes. Corinth Canal separates the beautiful Lefkada Town from the prefecture of Etoloakarnania, or Aetolia-Acarnania, or Aetoloacarnania.

Dorpfeld, the main pedestrian street begins at the south of the causeway. It was named after German architect, archaeologist and excavation pioneer Wilhelm Dorpfeld. Dorpfeld lived during the 19th century and claimed that Nidri, in Lefkada was the home of Homer's hero, Odysseus but not Ithaki.

The street runs to the main square, Plateia Agiou Spyridonos. From there it takes different names such as Ioannou Mela. At this point, many cafés, modern shops, post office and banks with ATMs stretch along the street.

Traditional Greek houses and villas merge with the new architecture in the town. Many cafés, bars and discothèques dominate the main square in the town of Lefkada. The square lives its climax at the evenings when it explodes by relaxed folks enjoying the beauty of the place and the crowd of people passing by.

The bus station is on Odhos Dhimitri Golérni at the southwest of the waterfront. The narrow streets full of taverns and bikes especially those drive to the nearest beach through the main street. There is a new port about some few hundreds metres from the old port.

The causeway and the other bridges on the canal offer beautiful views to through the edges of the canal and some activity centres organize even dangerous jump from the bridge over the Corinth down to the water.

The new marina offers yachting charters. The boats run through the Corinth Canal to the sea. The important sites in the beautiful Lefkada Town are Archaeological Museum and the Fortress of Agia Mavra.

The Fortress of Agia Mavra is a Venetian fortress from the 14th century located across the causeway. The remains dated back to the Venetian and Turkish times in the Island of Lefkada.

About three kilometres west of the Beautiful Lefkada Town is Moni Faneromenis from the year 1634 at the heights. A fire has destroyed it in 1886, but they rebuilt it. It offers views of the lagoon and the town from the heights.

The Archaeological Museum is in the modern Cultural Centre at the west end of Agelou Sikelianou or Aggelou Sikelianou. It displays collection of labelled finds in the Island of Lefkada through the Palaeolithic period to the late Roman period.

A classical building houses the Public Library of the Ionian Mela and post-Byzantine icons. There are works by icon painters among them are icons from the Ionian Islands in addition to icons from the Russian period dating to the year 1500 in the collection of the post-Byzantine icons.

The beautiful Lefkada Town was home to the Greek poet, Aristotelis Valaoritis, the Greek poet Angelos Sikelianos (1884-1951) and the fashion model Evangelia Aravani, Miss Star Hellas in 2005.

The beautiful Town of Nydri is on Nidri Fjord at the middle of the eastern coast, 16 kilometres south of Lefkada Town, surrounded by hills. Here is a mixture of heights, small farmlands, houses and other buildings in the heart of greenery and waters down the heights.

Nydri is in the municipality of Ellomenos and it has a road that connects it with Vailiki, Lefkada up to the GR 42 that links it to Greece. There are more than 1,011 inhabitants in the beautiful town of Nidri.

Nightclubs, tavernas, restaurants, shops, hotels, and banks with ATMs make it the best resort for many tourists. The eastern coast is a tourists' destination because of the beautiful Town of Nydri or Nidri, as it is the nearest town to the islets of Skorpios, Skorpidi, Sparti, Madouri and Meganisi.

Nydri was a small fishing village. Hard development ran to make it a resort and as step point to attract tourists to spend good times on the beach and hotels there and to sail to the mentioned islets. Beautiful hotels in Nydri such as Dionysos Luxury Apartments, Hotel Oscar and Delphini Hotel are in good places. See beautiful hotels in Lefkada at the main page of the Island.

Excursions leave to those islets and to Ithaki and Kefallonia. Motorboats also go the same direction to the nearest islets. The excursion boats stop at the sandy beach on the northern part of the islet for a swim.

Yachting services are on the waterfront and the main street in Nydri. The Dimossari Waterfalls are about 3 kilometres far from Nydri. Some people enjoy beautiful sights there. About 15 kilometres south of Nydri is the small harbour of Syvota or Sivota.

Madouri islet is privately owned islet. The Greek poet, Aristotelis Valaoritis (1824-1879) spent the last ten years of his life there. He was a member of the parliament representing the United States of the Ionian Islands and became a member of the Greek Parliament when the islands joined Greece.

Skorpios or Scorpios is also privately owned islet. The Greek millionaire Aristotelis Onassis (1906-1975) purchased it during his live. After his death, Onassis family runs it.

He married Jacqueline Kennedy, the widow of the former American president Jon F. Kennedy and she became Jackie Onassis on 20 October 1968 in Skorpios.

He dated also Anna Maria Cecilia Sophia Kalogheropoulos, known as the opera star, Maria Callas (1923-1977) in the islet while she was married to the Italian industrialist Giovanni Battista. Aristotelis Onassis has a statue in Nydri.
