Know the Beautiful Kefallonia Island before You Go!

The beautiful Kefallonia Island or the Island of Kefalonia is the sixth largest island in Greece and the first largest island in the Ionian group of islands.

It stretches at the west of Greece and the south of Lefkada into 781 square kilometres. There are 39,500 inhabitants in the Island of Kefallonia. More than 8,900 people live in the capital city of Argostoli.

The other five largest islands in Greece are the Island of Crete, the Island of Evia / Eyboia in the Sporades group of islands on the Aegean Sea, the Beautiful Lesvos Island in the northeastern group of islands, the Greek Rhodes Island in the Dodecanese group of islands and the Beautiful Chios Island in the north-eastern group of islands.

The second, third and fourth largest islands in the Ionian group of islands are the Beautiful Corfu Island, the beautiful Zakynthos Island and the Beautiful Lefkada Island.

Much of the beautiful Kefallonia Island is modern and many buildings are new or renovated after the earthquake in 1953.

The massive earthquake almost destroyed everything on the island, leaving only Fiskardo in the north untouched.

Mount Enos, Aynos or Ainos covers large area of the island reaching an elevation of 1628 m. There are rare fir forest species such as Abies cephalonica on the area of this mountain, which makes it unique in the Mediterranean region.

The slopes of the mountain descend slightly into the coastal areas making curves, coves and sharp edges of cliffs on the deep blue seas around the island.

Many wild horses known as Enos mountain horses range in the natural reserve of Mount Ainos. There are other peaks in the island such as Paliki Mountains in the west and the northwest.

Many species of wildflowers such as orchids cover the entire island and the scents of flowers, oregano, leaves and thyme flow with the air in the atmosphere.

Few monk seals reach the northwestern coasts of the beautiful Kefallonia Island sometimes. In the past, the Ionian Sea was home to this rarest mammal in Europe.

Loggerhead turtles have their nest grounds on the coastal area of the island and some other bird species migrate seasonally to the coastal areas and the mountains.

Corfu and Zakynthos had the greatest hits of tourists in the few past years and until recently. Daily flights connect the beautiful Island of Kefalonia with the mainland, Greece and other beautiful islands in the Ionian group of islands. Ferries run also between Sami, the main port of the beautiful Kefallonia Island and some ports in Italy such as Brindisi and Igoumenitsa. Ferries from Sami to Patra get also to some other ports in Italy.

Frequent ferries, up to five daily ferries run and connect other ports like Kyllini in the Peloponnese from Argostoli and Poros. Car ferries run every hour between 7.30 - 10.30 between Argostoli and Lixouri port on the eastern coast of Lassi Peninsula.

One daily ferry goes between Sami and Astakos through Piso Aetos in Athaki. Two daily ferries go from Pesada port in the south of the beautiful Kefallonia Island to Agios Nikolaos in the north of Zakynthos Island.

In addition, daily buses run from KTEL bus station between Kefallonia and Athens through Patra connecting with ferries.

There are about 11 buses run daily between the island from the bus station in Argostoli, south of the waterfront to Lassi Peninsula connecting to Kefallonia at the west. There are two busses to Skala, two buses to Poros and two buses to Fiskardo.

Kefallonia's buses run between Katelios, Sami, Skala, Fiskardo, Poros and Evfymia. There are also many car rentals and bike rentals' companies offering their services to the public and the visitors.
