Is the Beautiful Ithaki Island Beautiful, Really?

The beautiful Ithaki Island at the northeast of Cephalonia Island is part of Argostoli prefecture, although it is autonomous municipality and it is the eighth municipality in Kefalonia Island. See municipalities of Kefalonia.

It stretches off the central eastern coast and off the northeastern coast of Kefalonia in about 120 square kilometres and there are more than 4,000 inhabitants in the island. The small Island of Ithaki is one of the beautiful Ionian Islands in the Greek Ionian group of islands.

The first largest and beautiful islands in this group respectively are the beautiful Kefallonia Island, the beautiful Corfu Island, the beautiful Zakynthos Island and the beautiful Lefkada Island.

The capital city of the Island of Ithaki is Ithaki, Ithaca or Vathy. The capital is at the same time one of the world's largest natural harbours.

Homer's Odyssey refers to it as the lost home of Odysseus, where Penelope awaited him to return at the bay, as the mythology goes, adding in another source that the first people to settle there were descendants of Ithacus, the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea.

However, the "Odysseus Unbound: The Search for Homer's Ithaca", another reference claims that Paliki but not Ithaca was the home of Odysseus. Its history connects in much of its details to that of Kefalonia in particular and to the Greek history and the world history in General.

The Strait of Ithaca or Steno Ithakis separates the beautiful Ithaki Island from the beautiful Kefallonia Island stretching from 2.2 kilometres at the north to 4 kilometres at along this direction to the south.

Ithaki is mountainous and there are three peaks, Mount Roussano in the north, Mount Niritas in the centre and Mount Stefano in the south. However, a lush growth of vegetation and the olive groves, vineyards, pine and cypress trees cover this area in the interior of the island.

The greenery stretches to the western coast. Only the eastern coast is exceptional. A narrow, but high isthmus links the northern part of the beautiful Ithaki Island to the southern part of it.

The oldest settlements in the island are Anogi, Exogi and Perahori out of nine settlements in the entire beautiful Island of Ithaki.

This beautiful nature in the beautiful Ithaki Island offers the locals opportunities to engage in different activities supporting their living and making the standards of daily earnings in simple ways, although there is no flat land to invest on it economically.

Since long times, the Ithacan locals has continuously engaged in fishing, cultivation of raisins, vines and olives and experiencing trading through the sea and some of them have their groceries and boutiques.

Now with the rise of touristy demands, quite good numbers of locals engage in operating rental accommodations, villas, rooms, restaurants, and offering other touristy services.

Some of them engage in the small-scale agricultural industries and the wines industry and trade. Few work outside the island in Greece or the neighbouring islands.

There are three ports in the beautiful Ithaki Island. Port Vathy is on the Gulf of Vathy. Port Frikes is on the Bay of Frikes on the northeast. Port Piso Aetos is on the southwestern coast below Cape of the Nymphs. The three main beaches in the beautiful Ithaki Island are on the southern part of the island.

Ferries run daily between those three ports to some ports in the main land in Greece and other ports in the islands in the area. The ferries schedule varies according to the seasonal sea traffic and air traffic coming to the island through Kefalonia or directly from other ports.

Vathy or Ithaki Port has ferries that run to Patra Port in the mainland and to Sami Port in Kefalonia. Frikes Port has ferries that go to Fiskardo in Kefalonia and Vassiliki and Nydri in Lefkada. Aetos Port has ferries to Sami in Kefalonia, Vassiliki in Lefkada and Patra in the mainland. Some visitors arrive on ships with their own cars or rental cars and scooters.

The main bus in Ithaki was since long time served as local bus for students getting to their schools. This might have changed by the time you were reading this information here. Car rentals are better as money savers than a taxi in the island.
