Here are some facts about Irkutsk City to stop guessing.
The beautiful Irkutsk City is in a Russian province by the same name, about 1090 kilometres at the southeast of Krasnoyarsk and is the nearest largest city to Lake Baikal. It is the capital city of East Siberia.
This capital city is about 5,185 kilometres from Moscow on the Valley of Angara River and at about 72 kilometres from its flow-point from Lake Baikal and before it becomes tributary to Yenisei River at Strelka.
The Angara River is the longest river in the region and it reaches 1779 kilometres long, joins the Ilim River and empties into Yenisei River, which flows from Mongolia, runs 320 kilometres, drains large parts of Central Siberia before it empties its water in the beautiful Arctic Ocean.

The Irkutsk Hydroelectric Dam and three other bridges cross the river. The Irkut River, the city takes its name from it joins the Angara River.
The Irkutsk International Airport links the city internationally and the smaller Irkutsk Northwest Airport links it regionally.
In addition, the Trans-Siberian Highway and the Trans-Siberian Railway link it to other regions. The federal road and the railways pass to Moscow and Vladivostok through the side of Angara River from the city downtown, as there are three parts composing the big city.
There were more than 593,604 inhabitants in the city of Irkutsk. However, with the satellite industrial towns of Shelekhov and Angarsk the city forms the big metropolitan area with one million inhabitants.
As metropolis, it has good media networks of TVs, newspapers, web camera and numerous educational, economical and industrial institutions and enterprises.
The new educational institutions started since the 20th century and they include the East Siberian Education Academy, Irkutsk State University, Irkutsk State Medical University, Baykalsk State University of Economics and Law, Irkutsk State Technical University, Irkutsk State Academy of Agriculture, Irkutsk State Linguistic University and the Irkutsk State Railway Transport University.
There are also numbers of private colleges in the beautiful Irkutsk City, such as Siberian Institute of Law, Economics and Management and the ISTU Institute of Economics.
The beautiful Irkutsk City was built in 1651 and after a couple of decades it became the centre of expeditions to the north and the east, while exploring the wilderness of Siberia up to Alaska and it then becomes a trading and administrational centre.
As a trading centre, the Siberian ivory and furs trade and exportation began to function and those products had made the top list of exportation to the Tibet in China and Mongolia in exchange for tea and silk.
There are still some wooden houses and buildings in the beautiful Irkutsk City among the bricks, which illustrate the 19th century architecture, although the wildfire in 1879 had destroyed much of the city.

The gold treasure of Lena Basin, which started to prosper during the 1880s helped to reconstruct the city as a cosmopolitan in the heart of this area to be known as Paris of Siberia, before the revolution in Russia.
After the revolution, the beautiful Irkutsk City has become scientific, trade and industrial centre in the region.
The trade and commercial centre is at the grand Karla Marksa or Karl Marks Street and the main thoroughfare, Lenin Street that runs from the administrative centre at Kirova. Crossing the Angara River from the centre of the beautiful Irkutsk City, the road leads to the central train station.
The post office is at Stepana Razina 23 with a branch on Karl Marks 28 and the telecommunication is at the opposite direction of the circus at Proletarskaya 12.
Near the centre are many internet cafes and many tour agencies organizing excursions, booking hotels, and offering travel by train services.

There are few museums in different places in the beautiful Irkutsk City such as Taltsy Museum, the Regional Museum, the Volkonsky House Museum, Trubetskoy House Museum, the City History Museum and a grand Art Gallery.
The Regional Museum is on Karl Marks 2, the Volkonsky House Museum is on 10 Volkonskogo, the Trubetskoy House Museum is on Dzerzhinskogo 64, the City History Museum is on Tchaikovskogo 5 and the Art Gallery is at the corner of Lenin and Sverdlova streets.
Taltsy Museum is on Angara at the south of the beautiful Irkutsk City. It is an open-air museum of the Siberian traditional architecture.
The museums displays old wooden building from the villages flooded in the valley after the construction of the Bratsk Dam and Ust-Ilimsk Dam. The items were transported to the museum and among them is the recreation of the 17th century fortress of Ilimsk with its Spasskaya Tower.
The Regional Museum is an oldest museum in Siberia and is housed in an old building from the 19th century and founded in 1782 in the same place that housed the Siberian Geographical Society. It displays ethnographic items.
The Volkonsky House Museum has launched in 10 December 1985. The house was first built in 1818 in Urick village on the suburb of Irkutsk, the family moved after 1847 and the museum started in 10 December 1985.
It is a preserved house of Count Sergey Volkonsky with items from that date including photos of women with styles of the 19th century, stables and items in the piano room.
The Trubetskoy House Museum is nearby Volkonsky House Museum and it displays similar items provided by Trubetskoy family including paintings by princess Trubetskaya and her daughter.
The City History Museum is small city museum that displays the cultural history of the beautiful Irkutsk City following different eras since its foundation date in 1651. Among the displayed materials are cultural items and artefacts.
The Art Gallery is called the Irkutsk Gallery of Modern Art too. The gallery started in 2001, although the regional arts exhibitions in the beautiful Irkutsk City have long become tradition since the 19th century housed inside the houses of big families.
The Art Gallery has fine collection of arts including historical paintings and local painting by local artists.
Buses and boats link the beautiful Irkutsk City to some other cities and villages in Russia. There are buses to some places every day.
Boats run from the hydrofoil station through Lake Baikal to other cities on the shores of the lake. Schedule, tickets and other services are found in those stations and more information is available at the travel agencies.
There are some rooms, apartments and hotels in Irkutsk, such as Baikaler Hostel on Lenin Street 9 and Lazurny Bereg Hotel on Baikalskaya 252 B. However, it is difficult to get a room without prior reservation and checking availability.
